Hi @URMom1978,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP Envy 5000 printer is displaying an error message or indicating that the cartridge is not communicating, there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue.
Check Cartridge Installation:
- Ensure that the cartridges are properly installed in their respective slots. Make sure they are securely snapped into place.
Clean the Cartridge Contacts:
- Sometimes, the electrical contacts on the cartridge or within the printer may become dirty or covered with ink. Carefully remove the cartridges and clean the gold-colored contacts on both the cartridges and inside the printer using a lint-free cloth or a cotton swab lightly moistened with distilled water.
Restart the Printer:
- Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, and wait for a minute or two. Plug it back in and turn it on. This can sometimes reset communication errors.
Update Firmware and Software:
- Ensure that your printer has the latest firmware installed. You can usually update the firmware through the printer's control panel or the HP website. Additionally, make sure you have the latest printer drivers and software installed on your computer.
Use Genuine HP Cartridges:
- HP printers are often designed to work best with genuine HP ink cartridges. Using third-party or refilled cartridges may sometimes lead to communication issues.
Perform a Hard Reset:
- A hard reset can sometimes resolve communication problems. To do this, turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, and disconnect any USB cables. Wait for at least 10 minutes, then reconnect and power on the printer.
Check for Error Messages:
- Check the printer's display or control panel for any error messages or codes that can provide more information about the issue.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

I tried all of the above and the printer is still giving a communication error. I also received an email from HP InstantInk saying the issue was that I am using store bought ink, which is not true. I have never purchased ink from a store.
"Since you recently installed one or more store-bought cartridges in your HP ENVY 5052 All-in-One Printer, we wanted to check in and see if we can help."
Is it possible to get new ink cartridges sent ASAP? We did have a power surge and outage a few weeks ago and the printer started throwing cartridge errors after that. I'd like to just try a new cartridge.
