HP ENVY 5055 All-in-One Printer

I need help on how to get by or fix the Envy 5055 that has displayed use Setup cartridges that came with your printer.  I do not have them present.  What do I do now?

@ncbchboy, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The message "Use Setup Cartridges That Came With Your Printer" means your HP ENVY 5055 is still in initial setup mode and cannot proceed until the original HP Setup cartridges are used — these are special cartridges included in the box when the printer was first purchased.

🛠️ Why This Happens

HP printers like the Envy 5055 lock the first setup process to those original HP Setup cartridges to initialize the printer's ink system. Standard or Instant Ink cartridges won't work until the printer is initialized properly.

Your Options

Find the Original Setup Cartridges

  • If you still have them (maybe stored away), reinstall them to complete setup.
  • Even if they're empty, they might work just enough to finish initialization.

Sometimes, if the printer was previously set up, a reset may help.

🔁 Try a Semi-Full Reset:

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Unplug the power cord for 60 seconds.
  3. Plug it back in and press and hold both the Cancel (X) and Wireless buttons on the printer for 5+ seconds when powering it on.
  4. Wait for the printer to reboot.

⚠️ Note: This usually doesn’t bypass the setup cartridge requirement if it's your first setup. But it can help if the printer had already been initialized before and is stuck.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
