@marmillian, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding Color Printing Issues on HP ENVY 5540!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
If your HP ENVY 5540 printer is only printing in black and white despite having a color cartridge installed, you might want to try the following troubleshooting steps:
Check Ink Levels: Ensure that the color ink cartridge has sufficient ink. You can check the ink levels from the printer's display or via the printer software on your computer.
Ink Cartridge Installation: Confirm that the color cartridge is properly installed. Remove the cartridge and reinsert it to make sure it's seated correctly.
Printer Settings: Verify that the printer settings on your computer are set to print in color. In the print dialog box, ensure that the setting is not set to "Grayscale."
Run a Printer Test Page: Print a test page to check if the color cartridge produces any color. If the test page does not display color, there might be an issue with the cartridge or printhead.
Clean the Printhead: Sometimes, printheads can become clogged. Use the printer's built-in tool to clean the printhead. This can usually be accessed through the Setup or Tools menu on the printer's control panel.
Align the Printhead: If the cleaning doesn’t resolve the issue, try aligning the printhead. This option is also available through the Setup or Tools menu on the printer.
Driver and Software Updates: Check for any available updates for your printer's drivers or software. Outdated drivers can sometimes cause printing issues.
Check Color Cartridge Settings: Ensure that the color cartridge is selected in the printer preferences. Sometimes after changing cartridges, the settings may need to be adjusted.
Hope this helps!
Take care, and have an amazing day!
