Microsoft Windows 11

My question is for an Envy 7640 printer.   When I enter the serial number in the requested box :  not valid.  I know valid since I took picture off back of printer.

The printer is not printing every line readable.  Appox every third line is very light with only very bottom of letter showing.  As the page prints the third line get less and less readable to only black marks.  I have changed the black ink, and requested the printer to clean the cartridges.   NO luck.  Can anyone please help me.

Hi @Dalmatian5

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

That sounds incredibly frustrating—especially after replacing the ink and running a cleaning cycle.

Let’s try a few deeper steps to help your Envy 7640 get back to printing clearly:

🧰 Step 1: Align the printhead
Misalignment can cause uneven or missing lines:

  • On the printer’s touchscreen, go to Settings > Tools > Align Printer.
  • Follow the prompts and print the alignment page.
  • If the option isn’t visible, you can also do this through the HP Smart app or HP Printer Assistant on your computer.

🧼 Step 2: Run a second-level printhead cleaning
Sometimes the first cleaning isn’t enough:

  • Go to Settings > Tools > Clean Printhead again.
  • If available, choose Level 2 or Advanced Cleaning.
  • Print a test page afterward to check improvement.

🔍 Step 3: Inspect the ink cartridge and contacts
Even new cartridges can misbehave if contacts are dirty:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  • Remove the black cartridge and gently clean the copper-colored contacts with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
  • Let it dry completely before reinstalling.

🖨Step 4: Print a diagnostic page
This helps pinpoint which nozzles are misfiring:

  • Go to Settings > Reports > Print Quality Report.
  • Look for missing or faded blocks in the black section.

🧪 Step 5: Try printing from a different app
Just to rule out software issues:

  • Open Notepad, type a few lines, and print.
  • If it prints fine, the issue may be with the original document or app settings.

If the problem continues after these steps, the printhead itself might be worn or clogged beyond recovery. Let me know how far you get—I’ll stick with you until your printer’s back to printing like it should! 💪🖨
