I have just purchased the HP Envy Inspire 7220e and had just finished setting it up. I went to print a document off and the quality was terrible. It says there was a communication problem with tri-colour cartridge. Has anyone else had this issue and how did you resolve it.

I am very disappointed with this especially as its the first time using it.

Hi @AlanD1972,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP Envy Inspire 7220e is showing a communication problem with the tri-color cartridge and the print quality is poor on first use. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Check protective tape on the tri-color cartridge

Open the ink access door and remove the tri-color cartridge.

Make sure all orange plastic and clear protective tape has been completely removed.

Any remaining tape will cause communication and print quality issues.

Reseat the tri-color cartridge

With the printer powered on, remove the tri-color cartridge.

Reinsert it firmly until it clicks into place.

Close the ink door and wait for the printer to finish initializing.

Clean the cartridge contacts

Turn the printer off and unplug the power cord.

Remove the tri-color cartridge.

Using a dry, lint-free cloth, gently clean the copper contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer.

Reinstall the cartridge, plug the printer back in, and turn it on.

Run cartridge alignment

Open HP Smart → Printer Maintenance / Tools.

Select Align Cartridges and allow it to complete.

Alignment is required on first use to stabilize print quality.

Run cartridge cleaning

In HP Smart, select Clean Cartridges / Clean Printhead.

Run the cleaning once and print a test page.

If quality is still poor, run a second cleaning (avoid more than two in a row).

Confirm firmware and HP Smart are updated

In HP Smart, check for printer firmware updates.

Make sure you’re using the latest version of the HP Smart app.

Power reset the printer

With the printer on, unplug the power cord from the rear of the printer.

Wait 60 seconds, then plug it back in and power it on.

This clears initialization and cartridge communication errors.

I hope this helps.

I have done all that and it didnt make any difference.

The printer was brand new and just out the box. All instructions followed during the set-up process and the ink cartridges supplied with the printer fitted. The quality of the pages printed was very poor and its now showing a fault.

What are my options as the printer is brand new.
