Hi @Alpha4242,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like there might be an issue with the new black cartridge or with the printer recognizing it. Here are a few steps you can try to troubleshoot the problem.

  • Remove and Reinsert: Turn off the printer and carefully remove the new black cartridge. Check for any protective tapes or seals on the cartridge that might need to be removed. Then, reinsert the cartridge firmly into its slot and turn the printer back on.
  • Clean Contacts: Sometimes, dirt or residue on the cartridge contacts or the printer's contacts can prevent proper communication. Use a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with water to gently clean the electrical contacts on both the cartridge and the printer. Make sure they are dry before reinserting the cartridge.
  • Restart Printer: Try restarting the printer. Sometimes, a simple power cycle can resolve communication errors.
  • Update Firmware: Check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer. Updating the firmware can sometimes fix compatibility issues with new cartridges.
  • Try Another Cartridge: If possible, try using a different black cartridge, preferably a genuine one from HP. This can help determine if the issue is with the cartridge itself or with the printer.

By following these steps, you should hopefully be able to resolve the "problem cartridge black" error message.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thank you for your comments.  As it turns out the cartridge I bought from amazon had a covering on the contacts which I removed.  I should not have done this.  When I used the second cartridge that I bought in the package without removing the covering I was able to print.
