I currently own an HP 8015e printer which was purchased in December 2024. I have owned numerous laser jet and ink jet printers since the mid 1980’s, so I’m not new to HP printers and have changed toner and ink cartridges for almost 40 years without a problem. I have changed both the color and black cartridges (910 XL) on my HP 8015e as needed over the last 16 months and have always used genuine HP cartridges. Today I changed the Cyan cartridge just as I always have with no problem. Next I went to change the black cartridge as I always have, and ink gushed out of the cartridge all over my hands, desk, and paperwork. Thankfully my wife was home to bring me a trash can, paper towels, and a rag to clean up since my hands were full of ink. I cleaned up and went to the store and purchased two black cartridges thinking the first cartridge was a fluke.

I got home, double checked the instructions to ensure I was installing correctly, including the direction I was turning the orange handle, and it happened again. This time the ink mostly went on my wood desk, and a bit inside the printer, and a ton in my hands. I cleaned up as fast as I can, but I’m going to have to pay someone to strip and re-stain my wood file cabinet (new the cabinet was $1,200 eight years ago.

I’m a CPA, and I depend on my printer during tax season. So I thought this undoubtedly can’t happen three times in a row. You know the rest of this story, but I’ll explain anyway.

This time I opened the packaging and followed the directions again, but I opened it over a trash can. Kaboom, black ink all over my hands for the third time.

I’ve ordered new cartridges from Amazon hoping their product is better than the big box store I bought these cartridges from. If another a cartridge explodes in my hands I will be purchasing an Epson printer and posting reviews all over the internet on how bad and expensive HP’s inkjet printers and cartridges are.

I am frankly a huge long time fan of HP printers, but this is the worst experience I have had with computer equipment in 40 years.

It appears to me HP clearly has a problem with their manufacturing process since I have changed countless cartridges in the past with no issues, but three in a row more or less exploded in my hands when the orange handle was removed.

I fully expect a prompt and courteous response back from HP, preferably by phone, to resolve this issue.

Yea, that is disgusting.  I have HP cm1415 and bought a really cheap toner and had the same problem.  Fortunately, my problem was powder spilled, not liquid.  I have Canon T700 and there is a lot of ink that drips from the cartridges and I recently used tissue to remove some of it when I replaced a cartridge.

Check to see if ink is genuine

To check if an HP ink cartridge is genuine, look for a security label on the cartridge, scan the QR code on the label with your phone, and then go to HP's website hp.com/go/ok to verify the serial number on the label; if the label appears tampered or the serial number doesn't validate, the cartridge is likely not genuine.

Your ink should be warrantied.

I would have to assume they were genuine HO cartridges since they had HP labeling and were in an HP box. I quit buying bootleg cartridges a long time ago.

My question is how do I get compensation for the wood file cabinet that now has a black stain in it and pants with black ink splatters on them.

This is totally unacceptable to purchase over priced cartridges from the printer manufacturer and have them malfunction like this.

Walmart refunded my money on the cartridges, but I figure I’m out $500-$600 for the cost to get someone to strip and restain my file cabinet and purchase a new pair of Kuhl pants.
