HP Color LaserJet MFP M477fdw
macOS 10.15 Catalina

I have faint, indistinct, dim colors by printing with HP Color LaserJet MDF M477fdw. The logfile shows following codes: 54.1400 (error in registration sensor colorarea) and 54.1103 (error in density detection Yellow). Further search shows recommendation  to 'Reseat sensor connections on the DC Controller and if the error persists to replace the density sensor assembly (HP Part RM2-7399-000CN). Where is this sensor located in the printer? I find no documentation about the hardware lay-out of this printer. Is it feasible to reseat the sensor connections by myself as an engineer? I'm not familiar with this printer but want to reseat the sensor, more information about the hardware would be welcome. Thanks for any advice.

I really appreciate your answer, but I'am afraid that I do not understand what you mean with: 'Can you print a supplies status page scan and post it here?'. I have access to the printer and can post any data that may be helpful, but please can you specify more in detail which relevant data I should send. I send herewith already some data:

First question before you expend too much time on this. OEM or 3rd party cartridges?

The cartridge are 3rd party ones.

Given the error codes in the logfile (see attached printscreen), HP recommends: 'Reseat sensor connections on the DC Controller and if the error persists, replace the Density Detect Sensor Assembly (HP Part : RM2-7399-000CN'.

Does it still make sense to try this? I'm missing an exploded view of the printer to find out how feasible this is.

I replaced the sensor RM2-7399-000CN but the bad quality of the prints is still there. Although the non original cartridges, which printed approximately 3000 pages are still filled for about 50%, I consider to replace it by original HP-ones. BUT, on the HP website, I learned that after the error code 54.1400 and 54.1103, the following:

  • Recommended action for call-center agents and onsite technicians:
  • 4. Reseat sensor connections on the DC Controller.
  • 5. If the error persists, replace the Density Detect Sensor Assembly (HP Part RM2-7399-000CN).
  • 6. If the error persists, replace the printer.

If the problems are not caused by the non-original cartridges (I will never buy non-originals anymore!), I better replace the printer because I already learned that an equivalent one (HP Color LaserJet MFP M479fdw) use different cartridges (HP415 for the M479 instead of HP410 for M477.

Thanks for any advise.
