Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Firmware update seems to be the common denominator, Two 8710 printers sitting next to each other in our QA department had firmware updates on the screen, one was set to notify, the other to auto-update. After the update, both printers had the "scanner damaged or malfunctioning" error. The printers still print but the copy and scan feature are unusable. The third printer, a different department, the same model 8710. After the firmware update, we are now experiencing a "missing or incorrectly installed printhead" error while it prints a complete test page. This firmware update was performed by me (IT) so I made sure to follow all the steps to the T. Keep in mind that all printers functioned without issues before the firmware update....I cannot figure out what is going on, I've tried every HP-recommended fix to no avail.

You might contact HP and ask them about the problem. There are some other firmware problems on similar printers
