Envy 6000 series

This printer has a bright blue light which is always on when the printer is plugged in. We are told it will sleep and not use that much energy when not printing or in use when using the Instant Ink Program.  At first I thought this a good idea. However, I travel for several days at a time and do not want the printer nor the computer left on while gone. One never knows if a storm would blow the whole system. Therefore I may either chuck this Envy 6000 series printer or discontinue Instant Ink.  Bad over all system designs.

Welcome to the HP Community.

Sure, this setup might not be the best design for your needs and how you use your equipment.

That is a your personal judgement and we don't intend to talk you out of your opinions.

Observations / Opinions

For those printers that include "Edge lighting" as a means to communicate the printer's status:

Yes, the "Edge lighting" stays on when the printer is in Sleep mode.

The difference between other printers and this series is that one edge light that does stay illuminated.

Other aspects of "Sleep" are the generally the same as for other Inkjet Printers.

Yes, if your environment is not protected against electrical interruptions, if there is storm of the type that takes out your electrical, then the printer could be damaged.  This is true for other models as well.  The edge light does not impact the ability - or lack of ability - of the printer to protect itself when the power is suddenly removed / surged / otherwise suddenly interrupted.

Printers that use Edge lighting to communicate printer status are not generally different in their power requirements as compared to other printers.

Yes, too, if you wish to return the printer for this or any reason, you can do so when the printer is within its Return window.

Finally, if you are gone for days at a time and you have concerns about your power and your printer,

Switch off the printer using the power button on the back of the printer.

What?

Printers are  not meant to be left "off" for extended times - doing so can impact self-maintenance (that is) meant to keep the printer updated and to protect the ink system.

Instant Ink requires that the printer be connected to the Internet so the Instant Ink service can monitor the printer and the Instant Ink service.  When necessary, the printer can be switched off - leaving it off does not mean Instant Ink service is suspended.  As soon as is possible, you should switch on the printer, let it connect to Web Services so the Instant Service can "catch up" and check on the printer and the service.

What else?

Instant Ink Subscription plans, how they work, and your responsibilities, are explained in the Terms of Service Contract.

Example:   Instant Ink - Terms of Service - USA

What else?  If supported in your region, you might make use of “Pause” Vacation Mode according to the rules and exceptions in the contract.

That said, you must do what is right for your environment.
