I am using an HP 7610 printer.  I changed one of the ink cartridges an immediately the printer stopped operating and I get a "General Printer Error"  with basic instructions to correct the problem, but they don't work.  Several sessions with HP on line assistance have not been helpful.

@hillbilly71, Welcome to HP Support Community!

 

Try these steps - 

 

 1) Take out the cartridges. 
2) Unplug the power cord from the printer & wall. 
3) Wait for 30 seconds.  
4) Plug the power cord back into the printer and wall, ensure the printer is plugged into the wall & not to a surge protector. 
5) Insert the cartridges back into the printer.

 

Also, try updating the printer's firmware. Refer to this document for steps - HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware

 

If the issue persists, it could be a hardware failure.

 

Please reach out to the HP Support in your region regarding the service options for your printer.
