HP OfficeJet Pro 8740 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

I assume my HP 8740 Officejet Pro did a firmware update at some point and now the combo-pack (Black XL, Standard Cyan, Yellow, Magenta) that were still in the sealed package will not work.  I went to open the packaging and install the new ink cartridges and there was error displayed. Initially when I installed the new ink cartridges the display said Genuine HP cartridges are installed followed by a message on the display that says, "The Indicated cartridge is an older generation cartridge that does not work in your printer".

I have read where many people are having this error message both with non-Hp cartridges and with Genuine Hp cartridges.  I notice on the packaging (HP 952 Combo-pack) it showed July 2019. I went down to my local not so best buy and bought a new combo-pack and that old generation issue was gone. I also put the old ink cartridges (02/2021) back in the printer just to see what it would say, and the only issue was because they were depleted.   Again, the combo-pack that I had apparently bought in July 2019 is like milk with an expiration date. Is this a money ploy by forcing all to buy new ink cartridges by updating the firmware that is geared towards phasing out ink that is beyond its warranty date?

I am sure most everyone's printer is setup by default to update the firmware like mine was and there is no good news regarding rolling back my printer to an earlier firmware and resetting didn't work for my printer either.

It's bad enough the cost of the ink cartridges is astronomical and I'm sure they will be going up but to roll out a firmware update that make the same Ink cartridge that worked when i originally purchased the printer that now does not work seems wrong and a bit shady on HP's part. I cannot ever remember a single printer that i have owned with this same issue but look where we are in this day and age.

I am hoping there is a solution, or I/we are out pretty penny with all the extra cartridges that will not work. I have been a HP customer since my first computer back in 1996 and this is the first time that I have ever experienced anything like this.

Hi @JCHRLR68,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

Check for Firmware Updates:

Kindly refer to this link to update your printer firmware.

Verify Cartridge Authenticity:

Reinsert Cartridges:

  • Remove all ink cartridges from the printer.
  • Turn off the printer and unplug it for about 2 minutes.
  • Plug it back in and reinstall the cartridges one by one, ensuring each one snaps into place properly.

Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Disconnect the power cord from the printer while it is still on.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord back into the printer and turn it on.

Clean Cartridge Contacts:

  • Open the cartridge access door and remove the cartridges.
  • Clean the electrical contacts on the cartridge and in the cartridge slot inside the printer with a dry, lint-free cloth.

Use New Generation Cartridges:

  • If the error persists, it is possible that the firmware update made the printer compatible only with newer generation cartridges. You might need to purchase ink cartridges labeled specifically for compatibility with firmware updates.

I hope this helps.
