I am reaching out to seek assistance with an ongoing issue with my HP Color
Laser MFP 178nw. Despite installing a new laser imaging drum in May 2024, I am experiencing ghost printing again now, in less than 6 months, which is impacting the clarity and quality of my prints.
Given that I have already replaced the imaging drum, I am concerned that there may be an underlying issue with the printer itself. I would appreciate any guidance on potential solutions or troubleshooting steps that could resolve this issue.
I have tried all the steps suggested in the assist section. But failed.

Hi @drtarmizi,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds frustrating to deal with ghost printing on your HP Color Laser MFP 178nw, especially after recently replacing the imaging drum. Here are some troubleshooting steps and considerations that might help resolve this issue.
- Check for Other Faulty Components: Ghost printing can occur not just from the imaging drum but also due to worn or defective parts like the fuser or transfer belt. Inspect these components for wear or damage. If the fuser is not heating properly, it might not bond the toner effectively, leading to ghost images.
- Clean the Printer: Dust and debris inside the printer can also cause print quality issues. Perform a thorough cleaning of the printer, including the interior surfaces and any accessible rollers. HP often recommends cleaning the corona wires, which can also affect print clarity.
- Adjust Printer Settings: Ensure that your printer settings match the media type you are using. Incorrect settings can affect print quality, so check that you are using the correct paper type setting in the printer driver.
- Firmware Updates: Sometimes, updating the printer's firmware can resolve printing issues. Check HP's support site for the latest firmware version for your printer model.
- Test with Different Media: Print on different types of paper or use a different brand of toner (if applicable) to see if the problem persists. This can help identify if the issue is related to a specific type of media.
- Print Quality Diagnostic: Run a print quality diagnostic page from the printer's menu. This can help you determine if the issue is consistent across different colors or if it's isolated to one color.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
