Hi. I have a mfp 178 nw and the guarantee has ended. Now it has started to print a ghost image of the printed text a bit further down on the paper. The original imaging unit have 90 % life remaining. Can it help thb replace them? But they cost almost as much as the printer....

Is there any additional separate guarantee on them?

And. Why can I not choose oss and product on this Web page?

@StefanH_STHLM, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

If your HP MFP 178nw is experiencing ghosting issues, where a faint or ghost image appears repeatedly down the page, there are a few potential solutions to consider:

Check the Toner Cartridge:

  • Sometimes, ghosting can occur if the toner cartridge is not functioning properly. Ensure that it is seated correctly and check for any signs of damage. If the toner cartridge is low or nearing the end of its life, replacing it with a new, genuine HP toner cartridge may resolve the issue.

Print a Cleaning Page:

  • Use the printer's maintenance features to print a cleaning page. This process can help clear any toner buildup that might be causing ghosting.

Check the Paper and Environment:

  • Ensure you are using paper that meets HP's specifications. Also, make sure that the printer is not in an extreme environment (high humidity or temperature) as this can affect printing quality.

Diagnose Repetitive Defects:

  • To understand if the repetitive ghosting is due to a specific part, you can use a ruler to measure the distance between the occurrences of the ghost image. Comparing this measurement with common defect distances can help pinpoint the potentially faulty component.

Update Firmware and Drivers:

  • Make sure the printer’s firmware and drivers are up to date. This can often resolve printing errors caused by outdated software.

Inspect the Fuser:

  • Ghosting can sometimes be caused by a fuser unit that is not functioning correctly. If cleaning and cartridge replacement do not solve the issue, the fuser may need inspection or replacement by a service professional.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi Garp

Thanks for the tips.

most of them I have already checked, but that one with the ruler I will check when I have access to a printout on monday. 🙂

Hi again Garp

The distance between original text and the ghost text is exactly 19 cm.

What does that tell us? 😃

Best wishes

Hi,

Thank you for getting back to me, and great job checking the defect distance, that information helps a lot.

A 19 cm (190 mm) repeat distance is a very specific indicator, and it points directly to an issue with the fuser (fixing) unit on the HP Color Laser MFP 178nw.

Every component inside the printer has a fixed circumference. When ghosting appears at the same interval, we match that distance to the part responsible:

Fuser unit → ~19 cm

Imaging drum → ~4.7 cm

Transfer roller → ~4 cm

Toner cartridge rollers → much smaller repetitive distances

Since your defect repeats at exactly 19 cm, this confirms the fuser isn’t properly fixing toner to the paper, causing it to re-transfer further down the page.

Thank you.

Only 10% of the fuser capacity have been used. Is there a separate guarantee on that part? Even when the guarantee on the printer has expired?
