My HP 4500 is acting up in that the screen messaged me that the ink cartridges needed replacement.  I replaced both the black and color cartridges and received the message that the cartridges are incompatible with the printer and must be replaced.  I'm frustrated!

Hi @pmamidon, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble with your HP printer. Let's try to resolve this together. Here are a few steps you can follow to troubleshoot the issue:

1. Check Cartridge Compatibility: Ensure that the new cartridges are compatible with your HP 4500 printer.

2. Reinstall the Cartridges: Sometimes, removing and reinstalling the cartridges can help. Make sure the cartridges are properly seated in their slots. Here's a quick guide:

Turn on the printer and open the cartridge access door.
Remove the cartridges and check for any protective tape that might still be on the contacts.
Reinsert the cartridges, ensuring they click into place.

3. Clean the Contacts: Dirty contacts can cause recognition issues. Use a lint-free cloth and distilled water to gently clean the electrical contacts on the cartridges and inside the printer.

4. Reset the Printer: Perform a hard reset on your printer:

With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer and the wall outlet.
Wait for about 2-3 minutes.
Reconnect the power cord to the wall outlet and then to the printer.
Turn on the printer and check if the issue persists.

5. Update Printer Firmware: Ensure your printer's firmware is up to date. Sometimes, firmware updates can resolve compatibility issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
