HP Deskjet 3510 e-All-in-One Printer

Several months ago my Deskjet 3510 suddenly started saying the black cartridge was "incompatible." I have purchased and tried over a dozen of these, from Staples, a reputable retailer. I have bought them as pairs with 61 color cartridge, which works fine, so I can print in single-cartridge mode. But I have checked firmware and done all HP's recommended troubleshooting, so this is very frustrating. I wasted a lot of money on those cartridges! Any suggestions here?

And now, after trying to reinstall the printer, my HP Elitebook 840 reports that the printer has no ink at all - even though the printer itself says the color cartridge is over half full. Plus, my Apple iPad has no trouble connecting to this printer and outputting in single-cartridge mode. This is crazy.
