HP Officejet 6500 Wireless All-in-One Printer - E709n

My HP 6500 all in one was purchased in 2009. It's been a great machine but was difficult to make non-HP cartridges work. About a week ago the message indicated I was low on ink in the cartridges so I decided to replace all of them. I put in brand new non-HP cartridges and I immediately got the message that the "the following cartridges are either missing or damaged". I've tried a number things to correct the issue including reinstalling the old non-HP cartridges, reinstalling the new non-HP cartridges, removing the power cord (including unplugging from the outlet) and trying different suggestions I've found on line. I talked with HP and they told me on my (older) printer they do not have a built-in block on ink cartridges. Now it appears the three color cartridges have been accepted BUT... I now get the same message ("the following cartridges are either missing or damaged "). Specifically, only the black cartridge now shows "missing or damaged". Finally, I went to Walmart and purchased a new black cartridge. I installed it but the same message comes up "missing or damaged".

Anyone have suggestions??? I need help. I love this machine!
