HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

My HP 6978 will not print "blue".  I have cleaned the print heads multiple times to no avail.

Also, print alignment will not work.  It will print the page but will not scan the page as requested.

Hi @pawpawell,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like there might be a couple of issues with your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978. Let's tackle the problems one by one.

Printer Not Printing Blue

Here are some steps you can follow to troubleshoot this issue.

Check Ink Levels:

  • Ensure that the blue (cyan) ink cartridge has enough ink. If it is low or empty, replace it with a new cartridge.

Clean Printheads:

  • You've already cleaned the printheads, but sometimes, performing a more thorough cleaning might help. Go to your printer's maintenance menu and select a deep cleaning option if available.

Print a Diagnostic Report:

  • Print a Print Quality Diagnostic page from the printer's settings. This will help you see if the issue is with the cyan ink or something else.

Cartridge Check:

  • Ensure that the ink cartridges are properly installed and that there are no protective tapes still on them.
  • Try removing and reseating the cartridges.

Update Firmware:

  • Ensure that your printer's firmware is up to date. Sometimes, firmware updates can resolve printing issues.

Reset Printer:

  • Try performing a hard reset on your printer. Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for about a minute, and then plug it back in and turn it on.

Print Alignment Not Working

For the alignment issue, here are some additional steps.

Scanner Glass and Lid:

  • Clean the scanner glass and the underside of the scanner lid. Dust or smudges can interfere with the scanner's ability to read the alignment page correctly.

Paper Quality:

  • Ensure that you are using the correct type and size of paper as specified by the printer for alignment purposes.

Try a Different Alignment Method:

  • Some printers allow you to perform alignment using different methods. Check the printer's settings or the HP Smart app to see if there are alternative alignment options.

Firmware Update:

  • Again, check if there's a firmware update available for your printer. This can sometimes fix alignment issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
