HP Photosmart 7520 e-All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

It seems to be a common issue but have not seen one thread that resolves this.

My 7520 only seems to use Black Photo ink when printing colour documents, this is a very expensive option as I do not print photo and have it set to plain paper.

Trying to resolve this has not only cost ink but also paper to produce a basic colour document

Explanation in Thread  Question regarding Photosmart 7525 / Photosmart 7520 – five ink cartridges

Partial Excerpt

The smaller cartridge is the photo cartridge, used for printing dark areas when photo paper is selected in the driver, or when "automatic" paper selection is enabled and the media type is detected as photo paper.  It may also be used in some cases when printing graphics on plain paper.  If you are printing on plain paper make sure "plain paper" is selected in the media type selection for the driver.

The media is set at plain paper, and I have tried various settings, but the Black Photo small cartridge still empties first and I now have a number of large black ink cartridges as this never seems to be used.

OK - I can't help, I guess.

Years ago, I had two 7520s in different locations.

As I recall, both worked as expected when settings aligned with purpose.

Your experience is different from mine.
