I replaced my ink cartridges in my Office Jet 8139e. When I print only yellow shows up and the black ink is very faded. it appears blue and magenta don't show up at all. After I try and print I get an error message " Problem with the printhead"

I removed the ink cartridges and reinstalled but it didn't help.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi @Glenn119,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're dealing with an issue related to the printhead or ink cartridges. Here are the steps you can follow to resolve the "Problem with the printhead" error for your HP OfficeJet Pro 8139e printer. Once done, try to print a test page and check:

Step 1: Turn off the Printer and unplug it

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source for at least 60 seconds.
  • This can help reset the printer and clear any temporary issues.

Step 2: Check and Clean the Printhead

  • Open the printer’s front door where the ink cartridges are located. The carriage should move to the centre.
  • Gently lift the ink cartridge latch and remove all the ink cartridges from the printhead.
  • Look for any visible debris, ink buildup, or blockages in the printhead area. If you notice anything, it may need cleaning.
  • Dampen a lint-free cloth with warm water (not too wet), and gently wipe the printhead. Be careful not to press too hard.
  • You can also use a cotton swab dipped in warm water to gently clean the printhead nozzles.
  • After cleaning, let the printhead dry for a few minutes before reinstalling the ink cartridges.

Step 3: Reinstall the Ink Cartridges

  • After the printhead has dried, carefully reinstall the ink cartridges into their respective slots. Ensure they are seated properly and the cartridge latch clicks into place.

Step 4: Run the Printer’s Clean Printhead Utility

  1. Go to the Printer’s Settings:
    • On your Windows 11 PC, open the HP Smart app or HP Print and Scan Doctor.
    • In the HP Smart app, look for a tool that cleans the printhead, or in the HP Print and Scan Doctor, follow the prompts to clean the printhead.
    • Allow the tool to clean the printhead, which can help clear any dried ink or clogs.

Step 5: Check for Firmware Updates

  • Sometimes, firmware updates can resolve printhead or printing issues.
  • Open the HP Smart app and check if there’s a firmware update available.
  • If there is an update, follow the on-screen instructions to install it.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
