Hi @dsdoores,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

I understand that you are having issues with the cartridge error.

If you’re encountering an ink error with the black ink icon showing an "X" and the printer won’t print, even after replacing the ink cartridge with a new one, it’s likely an issue with the printer itself. Here’s a structured approach to troubleshoot and resolve the problem with your HP OfficeJet 8600:

Check Cartridge Compatibility:

  • Verify Cartridge Type: Ensure that the ink cartridges you’re using are the correct model for your HP OfficeJet 8600. Mismatched or non-HP cartridges can sometimes cause issues.

Inspect the Cartridge and Printhead:

  • Remove and Reinsert Cartridge:
    • Open the printer’s cartridge access door.
    • Remove the black ink cartridge and inspect it for any damage or protective tape that hasn’t been removed.
    • Reinsert the cartridge firmly into its slot, ensuring it clicks into place.
  • Check Printhead:
    • With the printer powered off, remove the printhead assembly (refer to the printer manual for instructions).
    • Gently clean the printhead contacts with a lint-free cloth or a soft, dry cloth to remove any ink residue or debris.
    • Reinstall the printhead and cartridges, ensuring they are seated correctly.

Perform a Printhead Cleaning:

  • From Printer Control Panel:
    • Navigate to Setup > Tools > Clean Printhead.
    • Follow the on-screen instructions to clean the printhead. This process can help clear any blockages that may be causing the error.

Check for Printer Firmware Updates:

  • Update Firmware:
    • Visit the HP Support website and check for any available firmware updates for your HP OfficeJet 8600.
    • Download and install the latest firmware if available, as updates can sometimes resolve hardware issues.

Reset the Printer:

  • Perform a Hard Reset:
    • Turn off the printer using the power button.
    • Unplug the power cord from the printer and the wall outlet.
    • Wait for at least 60 seconds.
    • Plug the power cord back in, then turn the printer on.

Please find the remaining steps in the next post.

Hi @dsdoores,

Please find the remaining steps below.

Check for Error Codes:

  • Look for Specific Error Messages:
    • If the printer displays specific error codes or messages on the control panel, note them down. Refer to the HP support website or the printer manual for troubleshooting steps related to those codes.

Perform a Printer Self-Test:

  • Print a Test Page:
    • Navigate to Setup > Tools > Print Quality Report or Print Test Page to check if the printer can print a diagnostic page. This can help identify if the issue is with the printhead or ink cartridges.

Check Ink Cartridge Contacts:

  • Clean Contacts:
    • Remove the cartridges and clean the copper-colored contacts on both the cartridge and inside the printer with a dry, lint-free cloth. Be careful not to touch the nozzles.

Inspect the Ink Cartridge for Leaks or Blockages:

  • Examine Cartridge:
    • Check if the black ink cartridge has any signs of leakage or blockages that could prevent proper ink flow.

If you have tried all these troubleshooting steps and the problem remains unresolved, contact HP Phone Support for further assistance. The issue might be related to a faulty printhead or internal printer components that may require service.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance
