Hi @Jimbo834,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP OfficeJet Pro 9020 is showing a message to use the setup cartridges and you're unable to access the display menus, here are some steps you can try.
Check Cartridge Installation: Ensure that the new cartridges are installed correctly. Sometimes, improper installation can cause recognition issues. Remove the cartridges and reinstall them, making sure they click into place.
Power Cycle the Printer:
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Wait for about 60 seconds.
- Plug the printer back in and turn it on.
Reset the Printer:
- If a power cycle doesn’t work, try performing a hard reset.
- Turn off the printer.
- Disconnect all cables from the printer.
- Wait for 60 seconds.
- Reconnect the power cable and turn the printer back on.
Remove and Reinsert Cartridges:
- Turn off the printer and open the cartridge access door.
- Remove the new cartridges.
- Close the door and turn the printer on.
- Reopen the door, reinstall the cartridges, and close the door.
Firmware Update: If you can get access to the printer’s settings through a connected computer or mobile app, check for any available firmware updates. Sometimes updates can fix recognition issues.
Check for Hardware Issues: If the above steps don’t work, there might be a hardware issue with the printer’s cartridge sensors.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
