Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

The HP Color Laser Jet Pro MFP M479fdw I use in my office will not print in color.

  • It WILL copy in color with no issues, so I know it is not an ink cartridge or hardware issue.
  • I can print in color to other printers I am connected to.
  • I have tried multiple programs (adobe, excel, word, even printing from my browser) and have used the print settings within each program to select a color print. As stated before I have no trouble printing in color to other printers.
  • The printer was freshly installed last week so the driver is up to date.

I have done the following:

  1. Attempted to adjust the color settings via: System settings > Printers & Scanners > [SELECT DEVICE] > printing preferences .
    • But there is no option in the Paper/Quality tab to change color settings (image below)

  • And I do not know what to select on the Advanced tab to correct the issue I'm having, but I have tested changing the ICM method to "Handled by host system" and also "Handled by Printer," and neither have had any effect at all. (image below)

I am extremely frustrated because even though I don't print color very often, I do need it occasionally and I prefer not to have to take two flights of stairs to get one sheet off of another printer in the building.

  2. Restart the PC
  3. Close all programs
  4. download only this complete package: HP LaserJet Pro M479fdw/M479fnw Printer Full Software Solution
  5. Close all programs

    File name: Full_Webpack-48.6.4638-CLJM478f-M479f_UWWL_Full_Webpack.exe (271.9 MB)
  7. The installation was completed successfully, now you must ...
  8. Restart the System again
  9. Now the installation is complete.

Document error messages accurately, even better is to take a screenshot of it and upload here.

After successful installation, install this software: Readiris Pro 16.5.12051

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

It is also possible that the driver has not detected or lost the setting that tells it the printer is color.

On your computer, go to control panel>devices and printers and right click on the icon for your printer and select "printer properties" from the drop down menu. The click on the device settings tab and scroll down till you see device type and change from auto to color.

Following those instructions takes me to the correct place, but I do not have the same information to select from (image below).

I get to the "Device Type" and when I click the drop down arrow, there are no other options. In fact all of the options in this list are grayed out as though none of them are able to be changed.

Edit: I also wanted to say, I am listed as an administrator (redacted info in red) and have access to "manage this printer" so I should be able to make these types of changes.
