My color laserjet (HP Color LaserJet MFP M277dw) has started to print ghost images -- faint repeats down the page - when I print in color, usually on cardstock (slightly heavier printer paper). I've tried different types of paper and the problem persists. It is fine printing on regular printer paper in color and b&W. I do tend to print color graphics on cardstock so there is more ink. However, this started about a year ago (yes, yes, I know) prior to that there were no issues.
Is there something I can do to fix this or is it just wearing out? The printer is pretty old (15 years?)

Hi @watterworks,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Ghosting issues on your HP Color LaserJet MFP M277dw when printing on cardstock can arise from several factors. Since you mention that the printer is about 15 years old, age and wear could certainly contribute to the problem. However, there are a few steps you can take to potentially solve or mitigate this issue before considering the replacement of the printer or its parts.
Check and Adjust Printer Settings:
- Ensure that you have selected the correct paper type in your printer settings. For cardstock, the printer should be set to a heavier paper mode, which adjusts the speed and temperature of the print process to accommodate thicker paper.
- Reduce the print speed setting if possible. Slower speeds can improve print quality by allowing better fusion of the toner on heavier paper types.
Clean and Inspect the Fuser Unit:
- Ghosting can be a sign that the fuser unit (which heats the toner powder to bond it to the paper) is not heating properly or evenly. Inspect the fuser for signs of wear or damage. Since this part is essential for achieving crisp prints, any deficiency here could lead to quality issues like ghosting.
- If accessible, carefully clean the fuser. Be aware that fusers can be hot and are sensitive components, so follow your printer's manual for guidance.
Replace Consumables:
- Consider replacing the toner cartridges if they are old or low. Sometimes, uneven distribution of toner can lead to print quality issues.
- If the printer uses a separate imaging drum (some models combine it with the toner cartridge), check its condition and replace it if needed. The drum unit is critical in transferring toner to the paper, and wear or damage can lead to ghosting.
Paper Quality and Storage:
- Ensure that the cardstock is not excessively humid or has been stored improperly. Moisture in the paper can affect how toner adheres to it.
- Try a different brand or type of cardstock to see if the issue persists. Some papers may be incompatible with your specific printer model.
Printer Maintenance Kit:
- Given the age of your printer, it might be helpful to replace several maintenance components. Printers often have maintenance kits available that include new fusers, rollers, and other parts prone to wear.
Firmware Update:
- Check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer from the HP website. Updates can resolve unexpected behaviors and improve performance.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
