I am finally changing my black toner for the first time on my HP Color Laserjet MFP M182nw.

I get "indicated cartridges blocked for containing non-hp chip". displayed on the printer itself.

My toner is not an expensive HP one.  I bought a LD toner cartridge that is compatible with the 215A that is required for this printer.  This is what I have done so far.

1. WASTED numerous hours trying to get to this point.

2. I have restarted both printer and computer.

3. Unplugged printer for 10 minutes

4. Checked the firmware and it is currently the latest

5. Through HP Smart in the system tab under supply settings, both cartridge policy and protection are both off.

-Though if I switch the policy toggle the printer will print one page at a time.

I've tried to go through the support page, but for some reason it will not recognize the product number. Virtual chat is a joke!

Hi @ggamer68,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're experiencing a common issue where third-party or non-HP toner cartridges are not recognized by HP printers due to the chips embedded in the cartridges. Here are some steps and tips that might help resolve the issue:

You may refill your cartridges or use remanufactured cartridges, but you may run into problems. HP will not guarantee the functionality of those ink cartridges.

There are many cartridges in the market which is refilled and sometimes the chip is not configured to work with the printer. You need to contact the cartridge manufacturer and find out why it's not working. Try a different cartridge supplier and check if that works.

Check the Cartridge Chip:

  • Ensure that the chip on the cartridge is clean. Sometimes dust or debris on the chip can prevent the printer from reading it properly. Clean it gently with a soft, dry cloth.

Reinstall the Cartridge:

  • Remove the cartridge and reinstall it to make sure it is properly seated in the printer. This can sometimes resolve detection issues.

Update or Downgrade Firmware:

  • You mentioned your firmware is up to date. However, some users have found that rolling back to an earlier firmware version can sometimes resolve compatibility issues with non-HP cartridges. This step is a bit technical and might involve finding a specific older firmware version online and manually installing it.

Reset the Printer:

  • Beyond unplugging the printer, you can try a full factory reset. This option is usually found in the printer's setup menu under "Tools" or "Settings." Be aware this will erase all settings on the printer and return it to its original state.

Contact the Cartridge Manufacturer:

  • Since the issue involves a third-party cartridge, contacting LD might provide some insights or specific steps for their products. They might also offer a replacement if the cartridge is defective.

Consider Using an HP Cartridge:

  • If none of these solutions work, the most straightforward resolution might be to use an HP-branded cartridge, especially if printer downtime is critical for your work or business.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hello, i am having issues too with a similar issue and need to downgrade the firmware, can you tell me how to do that?

HP Recommended

I cannot give you the download link,  because they won't/ don't us to have it unless you sign up for a support plan.  All future firmware upgrades are written to block non hp toners for their printer line.  Just Google "hp blocks non hp toners".

And this is my last HP product.

i actually have an HP toner installed though.  I just think the firmware failed to update properly

You can go to the support page, put in your serial number.  That should provide you with all the software associated with your model.

Thank you, but it doesn't supply you with previous firmware versions.   I need to force it to update to the new one (it tells me i am up to date on firmware) so thought of trying to load the prior firmware update, then update again but cannot find the prior versions of firmware to install or instructions how to
