Resolved! Replaced Black ink cartridge. Some bum steers along the way - found that only 'text' (eg Word, emails, etc.) were affected, graphics not affected. (If you're desperate, cut and paste the text you need to print into a Word Text Box, which seems to be treated as a graphic). So... even the 'black' in graphics is printed using the colour cartridge, so graphics print OK - who'd a think it). A cartridge which appears to gave ink can play up if not used for a while, and, apparently, if you turn the printer off other than with the power button (eg by pulling the plug out). Something to do with heads not parking themselves properly.   Good luck!
