HP DeskJet Plus 4158 All-in-One Printer

I've run diagnostics, and updated to the latest firmware.

My printer is still printing blank pages. Any recommendations on how to resolve would be greatly appreciated.

Hi @Dennis1903

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP DeskJet Plus 4158 is printing blank pages despite running diagnostics and updating the firmware, there could be a few different reasons behind this issue. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you resolve the problem:

1. Check the Ink Cartridges

The first thing you want to ensure is that your ink cartridges are not empty, dried out, or improperly installed.

Check Ink Levels:

  • On your printer's control panel, you should be able to check the ink levels to see if they are low or empty.
  • Alternatively, you can check the ink levels through the HP Smart app or HP Printer Assistant on your computer.

Reinstall the Cartridges:

  • Power off your printer and open the printer's ink cartridge compartment.
  • Remove both the black and color cartridges. Carefully clean the metal contacts (on both the cartridges and the printer) with a soft, lint-free cloth.
  • Reinstall the cartridges properly and make sure they are securely seated.

Check for Protective Tape: If your cartridges are new, ensure that the protective plastic tape has been removed from the cartridge nozzles.

2. Perform a Printhead Cleaning

A common cause of blank pages is clogged printheads.

  • On the printer’s control panel, look for an option to perform a clean printhead or clean ink cartridges. This is typically available under the Settings or Tools menu.
  • You can also do this through the HP Smart app or HP Printer Assistant on your computer.

3. Check Paper and Settings

Make sure there is no issue with the paper or print settings that could be causing the blank pages.

  • Paper Type: Ensure that you're using the correct paper type for your print job. For example, if you have it set to print on glossy paper but are using plain paper, this could cause issues.
  • Print Quality: Make sure that your print settings are not set to draft mode, which may result in very light or blank prints. In the print dialog on your computer, check that the print quality is set to normal or best.

4. Run a Printer Self-Test

If your printer's diagnostics haven’t solved the issue, running a self-test can help identify potential problems.

  • Turn the printer on.
  • Hold the cancel button (the red ‘X’ button) and the Resume button simultaneously for about 5 seconds. This will trigger a self-test printout.
  • This will print a page to check for any issues with the printhead, alignment, and cartridge performance.

5. Reset the Printer

Sometimes resetting the printer can clear any errors and restore normal functionality.

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for about 30 seconds and then plug the printer back in.
  • Turn it on and try printing again.

6. Update Printer Drivers

Sometimes the problem can stem from outdated or corrupted printer drivers.

  • Make sure your printer’s drivers are up-to-date. You can do this through the HP Smart app or by visiting the HP Support website to download the latest drivers for your model.
