I am using a HP DeskJet 2135 with the 680 colour series. I just newly installed the black & colour cartridges. Eventho the cartridges are full, the orange light blinks for the black cartridge and HP Smart cant seem to detect the ink level. I’ve tried with other cartridges and the same problem occurs. When I try to print, it skips a line every few lines. Please help!

Hi @ItsQ,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thank you for sharing the image. It shows a Print Quality Diagnostic Page from your HP DeskJet 2135. Here’s what I see and what it means:

Likely Causes

  1. Cartridge Recognition Issue
    • The printer is not detecting the black cartridge properly (chip error or contact issue).
    • This explains the blinking orange light and missing ink level in HP Smart.
  2. Printhead or Electrical Contact Problem
    • Even if the cartridge is full, poor contact between the cartridge and the printer can cause intermittent printing and skipped lines.
  3. Firmware or Cartridge Compatibility
    • If the cartridge is non-genuine or previously refilled, the printer may reject it.
    • HP 680 cartridges must be genuine for proper detection.

Fix Steps

1. Clean Electrical Contacts

  • Power off the printer.
  • Remove the black cartridge.
  • Clean the gold contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
  • Let dry completely, then reinstall.

2. Hard Reset

  • With the printer ON, unplug the power cord.
  • Wait 60 seconds, then reconnect and power on.

3. Align & Test

  • From the printer menu or HP Smart:
    • Run Align Cartridges.
    • Print another Diagnostic Page.

4. Check Cartridge Authenticity

  • Ensure the black cartridge is an HP 680 genuine cartridge.
  • If it’s refilled or third-party, the printer may not read the chip, causing the blinking light.

5. Update Firmware

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
