Printer was acquired some time ago but only just set up (my mother couldn't figure it out until someone came to help). It will now connect to devices and print/scan, but it is not using any black ink, only colored--even though both cartridges are new. No error messages or low-ink warnings, it just doesn't use any of the black ink (printing or copying). However, I found a post suggesting a switch to glossy paper mode in the print dialog box, and that triggers it. Still will not print on regular mode, but black ink is used in glossy paper mode (so the cartridge is not the problem). Help!

Actually no. When you set the printer to print in a glossy paper mode the printer uses a colour ink cartridge to mix colours to print black.
Your black ink cartridge dried inside from the printer not being used for a long period or just from old age. If you install a new fresh black ink cartridge the printer will print fine.

Thanks for the reply; I didn't realize that about glossy print mode! I had seen others say that replacing the cartridge didn't help, so I wasn't sure that would work, however, I felt like I was out of options. So, although I was worried I might be wasting my money, I did go out yesterday and buy a new cartridge. As soon as the new one was installed, it began to print properly--so I believe you were correct!
