Hi @PCMeniac,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Yes, you should be able to print in black and white using your HP DeskJet 2700e even if the color cartridge is low on ink or showing an error. However, HP printers sometimes require both cartridges (black and color) to be functional and contain some ink, even when you only want to print in black and white.
Here's what you can try.
Check Printer Settings:
- Ensure your print settings are configured to print in "Black & White" or "Grayscale" mode. This can sometimes bypass the need for the color cartridge.
Override Cartridge Warning:
- Sometimes, the printer may allow you to proceed with printing after acknowledging the warning message about the low color ink. Follow the on-screen prompts to continue printing.
Replace or Refill the Color Cartridge:
- If the printer insists on needing the color cartridge, you might need to replace or refill it even if you only intend to print in black and white. Some HP printers do not print at all if one of the cartridges is completely empty.
Update Printer Firmware:
- Make sure your printer's firmware is up-to-date. An outdated firmware can sometimes cause issues like these.
Use Single-Cartridge Mode:
- If your printer supports single-cartridge mode, you can remove the color cartridge and continue printing with just the black cartridge. This feature may be available in your printer settings.
If these steps do not resolve the issue, you may need to replace the color cartridge to restore full functionality.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

HI,
Thanks for the prompt response.
Following your advise, my issue has now been resolved and I am now able to print in black & white by just replacing the black ink cartridge and not the coloured one as well.
