I was printing quite a few pages 2weeks ago and all of the sudden my printer stopped printing in color. This is a major problem for my business. It killed my Christmas work and I've been working on it every which way since.
I can't even see my preferences because an error message pops up: "Function address 0x00007FFBDB5183A caused by a protection fault. ( exception code: 0xe06d7363). I have tried many ways to get rid of this BUT I KEEP HITTING A WALL.
COULD SOMEONE PLEEEEEEEAAAASSSSE HELP ME OUT????
My test and configuation pages print in color but nothing else. I have plenty of color ink and even back ups for back ups. ( I have been a loyal hpinstantink member since 2018).
I am at my wits end and my work is backing up, Orders have even canceled. PLEEEEEASSSE HELP ME SOMEBODY!!!!
Thank you in advance for your time and cooperation in this matter. I will be forever in debt to you.
Sincerely,
Kimi

Hi @DIEHARDB,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I'm sorry to hear about the trouble you're experiencing with your HP ENVY 4520 printer. I understand that it's critical for your business, and we'll work through this to try to resolve it. Based on what you've described, it seems like you're dealing with two issues: the inability to print in color (even though test pages print in color), and an error message related to a "protection fault."
Let's try a few things:
Check the Printer Settings:
- Windows: Go to your printer settings via Control Panel > Devices and Printers. Right-click your HP ENVY 4520 printer and select Printing Preferences. Ensure the color settings are configured to print in color and not grayscale.
- Mac: Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners. Select your HP ENVY 4520, then click Options & Supplies and ensure the color printing settings are set correctly.
Reset the Printer:
- Turn off the printer.
- Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer.
- Wait for 30 seconds, plug it back in, and turn the printer on.
- This may help clear any temporary errors causing the color printing issue.
Check the Ink Cartridges:
- Even though your test pages print in color, make sure all ink cartridges are installed correctly and are full. Sometimes the printer can fail to recognize a cartridge if it's improperly seated or has a minor issue.
- Run the HP Printer Troubleshooter to check for any ink-related problems.
Update or Reinstall Printer Drivers:
- The protection fault error might be related to a driver issue. Try updating or reinstalling your printer drivers:
- Go to Device Manager (on Windows) or Printers & Scanners (on Mac) and uninstall the printer.
- Go to the HP support page for your printer and download the latest drivers for your operating system.
- Reinstall the drivers, and then test printing again.
Check HP Instant Ink Status:
- Since you're using HP Instant Ink, make sure your account is active and the ink cartridges are being properly detected. Sometimes the service can run into issues.
- Log into your HP Instant Ink account and verify there are no account issues or delivery problems.

Run a Printhead Cleaning:
- Even if test pages print in color, the color ink might be misaligned or clogged. Run a printhead cleaning from the printer's control panel or through the HP software on your computer.
Error Code: Protection Fault
- The error message you’re seeing could be related to a software or system issue. If you're running on Windows, try:
- Running a system SFC scan (System File Checker) to check for and repair corrupted system files:
- Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
- Type sfc /scannow and press Enter.
- Let the scan complete and see if it fixes the issue.
- Running a system SFC scan (System File Checker) to check for and repair corrupted system files:
- If the issue persists, consider performing a System Restore to a point when the printer worked correctly.
Try a Different Application:
- Sometimes, certain applications may not send print jobs in color correctly. Try printing from a different application (e.g., print a document from a web browser instead of Word).
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
