HP ENVY Photo 7164 All-in-One Printer

I have been having constant issues with this printer when it comes to print quality.  Performing the clean print head and other clean functions in an attempt to fix the print quality makes the print quality worse each time.  I am very unhappy with this printer and the constant print quality issues.  Below shows where the more I perform the cleaning function, the quality gets worse.  I have replaced the printer ink cartridges numerous times and I have not performed that many print jobs.  I have wasted more printer paper trying to resolve the issue than anything else.

Hi @dcatt77,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you're having a frustrating experience with your HP ENVY Photo 7164. If repeated cleaning is making the quality worse and replacing the cartridges hasn’t helped, here are a few steps you can try to resolve the issue:

  • Check Cartridge Installation: Ensure that the cartridges are installed correctly. Sometimes, they might not be seated properly, causing print quality issues.
  • Perform a Printer Reset: Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source for a few minutes. Plug it back in and turn it on. This can sometimes resolve software glitches.
  • Check for Firmware Updates: Ensure that your printer’s firmware is up-to-date. Sometimes, updates can fix bugs and improve performance.
  • Try a Different Paper Type: If you’re using a paper type that the printer doesn’t handle well, it could affect print quality. Try using high-quality paper designed for inkjet printers.
  • Check Ink Levels: Make sure the ink levels are adequate and that the cartridges are not expired. Sometimes, low ink levels or expired cartridges can cause issues.
  • Print a Diagnostic Page: Many printers have a built-in diagnostic page that can help identify issues with print quality. Check the printer's manual or settings menu for instructions on how to print one.
  • Manual Printhead Cleaning: If automatic cleaning isn’t helping, you might need to manually clean the printhead. Refer to the printer’s manual for instructions on how to do this safely.

Gaya1239,

So I have tried other recommendations that HP has documented like manually cleaning the print heads, etc. and it doesn't seem to make a difference.  I'm so frustrated with this printer.  I think I have probably wasted more paper in troubleshooting printer issues than printed documents.  I'll keep trying different things I guess.
