I have replaced my color cartridge with an hp cartridge but continue to get “ ink cartridge problem-replace cartridge”. I have cleaned, installed and uninstalled the cartridge, shut it down, unplugged it and can’t get rid of the message so I can’t print anything. Anyone know how to to bypass or clear this message to be able to print or any other suggestions?? TY

Hi @KK2025,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If you are still seeing the "Ink Cartridge Problem - Replace Cartridge" message after replacing the cartridge in your HP Envy 4500, here are a few additional troubleshooting steps you can try.
Check for Protective Tape
Ensure that any protective plastic tape covering the new cartridge’s contacts has been fully removed. This tape can prevent the cartridge from making proper contact with the printer.
Re-seat the Cartridge
Even if you’ve reinstalled the cartridge, it's worth trying again:
- Turn off the printer and unplug it.
- Open the cartridge access door.
- Remove the cartridge, check for any obstructions, and then carefully reinsert it, ensuring it's seated properly.
Check for Cartridge Compatibility
Ensure that the new cartridge is compatible with your HP Envy 4500. Even though it's an HP cartridge, it must be the correct model for your printer (such as HP 61 or HP 61XL for this model).
Clean the Cartridge Contacts
Sometimes dirt or ink buildup on the cartridge contacts can cause a poor connection:
- Gently wipe the metal contacts of the cartridge with a soft, lint-free cloth or paper towel lightly moistened with water.
- Similarly, clean the contacts inside the printer where the cartridge connects.
Perform a Printer Reset
To reset your printer:
- Turn off the printer.
- Unplug it from the power source and wait for 60 seconds.
- Plug it back in and turn it on.
- Check if the error clears.
Firmware Update
Sometimes, a firmware update may be needed to fix cartridge recognition issues:
- Visit the HP Support website and search for your printer model.
- Check if there are any available firmware updates for your Envy 4500 and follow the instructions to update.
Try a Different Cartridge
If possible, try using a different cartridge (preferably a brand-new one) to rule out the possibility that the cartridge itself is defective.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
