HP Envy 4520 is printing blank pages (both color and back&white).  Made sure all outstanding updates were applied, aligned the printer, went through the clean printer head process several times (all phases), unplugged the printer, reset printer to factory defaults.  None of these steps worked.  I did take out and confirmed that black ink comes out when swiping across damp napkin which confirmed there is ink and it isn't dry.  Now what needs to be done to get the printer working again?

Hi @HappyUserWannaB ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue with your HP ENVY 4520 is still printing blank pages after trying all these troubleshooting steps, the issue could be related to a deeper hardware fault or software configuration problem. Here’s what you can do to further diagnose and resolve the issue:

1. Confirm Cartridge Installation

  • Reinstall the Cartridges: Remove both the black and tri-color cartridges and reinstall them. Make sure they click into place securely.
  • Check Cartridge Compatibility: Ensure you are using genuine HP cartridges compatible with the ENVY 4520 printer. Non-HP cartridges or refilled cartridges might cause issues.

2. Perform a Manual Printhead Cleaning

Since the automatic cleaning hasn't worked:

  1. Power off the printer.
  2. Remove the cartridges.
  3. Use a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water to gently clean the electrical contacts on the cartridges and the corresponding contacts inside the printer.
  4. Allow the contacts to dry completely, then reinstall the cartridges and power the printer back on.

3. Test with a Diagnostic Print

Perform a print-quality diagnostic page to check for patterns:

  1. Go to the printer's Settings > Tools > Print Quality Report.
  2. Review the report for missing colors or streaks. If the black or color patterns are absent, it’s indicative of a printhead issue.

4. Use HP Print and Scan Doctor HP Print and Scan Doctor

  1. Download and install HP Print and Scan Doctor.
  2. Run the tool, and let it diagnose the printer. It can automatically detect and fix common issues.

5. Update Firmware Update the firmware on an HP printer

Outdated firmware can sometimes cause unexpected printing behavior:

  1. Visit the HP ENVY 4520 support page.
  2. Download and install the latest firmware update for your printer.

6. Bypass Print Queue or Driver Issues

  • Print Using a Different Driver:
    1. Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
    2. Right-click your printer and select Printer Properties.
    3. Navigate to the Advanced tab and change the driver to "HP DeskJet 9800" (or a similar generic HP driver).
  • Try Printing a Test Page Directly from another device (e.g., phone or tablet).

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
