Hello All,

I have an HP Envy wireless 4520 that worked perfectly before the software (or possibly firmware) update it told me to do a few months ago.  Immediately after that, it now only prints the top line or two of the page, then shoots out the paper.  It does this on both color & black and white settings.  I use only HP ink cartridges, those were functioning fine prior to the update and are new.  I have re-installed the drivers, software, firmware, checked paper settings and re-set the printer to factory defaults.  The issue still persists.  Any thoughts or guidance would be greatly appreciated as I refuse to pay the required $20 for tech support for something resulting from HP's guidance and update.  The scanning and other functions are working fine.  Mac OS 15.4.1.

Hi @Craig123451,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

We understand that you're experiencing issues with your HP Envy 4520 printer after a recent software or firmware update, where it only prints the top one or two lines of a document before ejecting the paper. We're here to help resolve this issue.

1. Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Perform a hard reset of the printer to ensure that any potential glitches in the firmware or software are cleared:
    1. Turn off the printer.
    2. Disconnect the power cord from the printer and unplug it from the wall outlet.
    3. Wait for 1-2 minutes before reconnecting the power cord and turning the printer back on.

2. Check for Firmware Updates:

  • Sometimes, a new firmware update can address bugs or issues introduced by previous updates. Check for any new firmware updates available for your printer:
    • On your Mac, open HP Smart or the HP Print and Scan Doctor (if installed), and check if a firmware update is available.

3. Print from a Different Application:

  • Sometimes, specific applications may have settings that conflict with the printer. Try printing from a different application (e.g., Preview, Word, etc.) to see if the issue persists across various programs.

4. Check Printer Settings:

  • Ensure that the paper size and type settings on your printer match the type of paper you are using. Sometimes mismatched settings can cause print issues.
  • To verify this, go to the Printer Settings or Preferences in the print dialog on your Mac. Check the paper size (e.g., A4, Letter) and ensure it is correctly selected.

5. Perform a Printer Self-Test or Printer Diagnostic Report:

  • Many HP printers have built-in diagnostic tools to help identify and resolve printing issues.
  • From the printer's control panel, select Setup > Tools > Printer Maintenance > Print Quality Report (or similar options depending on the model).
  • This will help determine if the issue is related to the printer's hardware or ink cartridges.

6. Clear Print Queue and Restart Printer:

  • Sometimes, print jobs can get stuck in the queue, leading to incomplete prints. Clear the print queue on your Mac by following these steps:
    1. Open System Preferences on your Mac.
    2. Click Printers & Scanners.
    3. Select your HP Envy 4520 printer and click Open Print Queue.
    4. Clear any pending print jobs.
  • After clearing the queue, power cycle the printer (turn it off, wait for 30 seconds, and then turn it back on).

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
