HP ENVY 5052 All-in-One Printer

My printer hasn't been used for awhile.  I installed new cartridges for both.  I cleaned the cartridges multiple times but still fail to get black to come through.  Help!

Hi @Bev1131,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand your HP ENVY 5052 All-In-One Printer is not printing black ink despite installing new cartridges and cleaning them multiple times, there are a few troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve the issue:

Step 1: Verify the Cartridge Installation

  1. Turn on the Printer: Make sure the printer is powered on.
  2. Open the Ink Cartridge Access Door: Wait for the carriage to move to the center.
  3. Check the Cartridges: Ensure that the black ink cartridge is properly seated. Remove and reinsert it to make sure it clicks into place.

Step 2: Check the Ink Levels

  1. Printer Control Panel: On the printer control panel, navigate to the ink levels section to ensure the new cartridge is recognized and shows as full.
  2. HP Smart App: Alternatively, use the HP Smart app on your computer or mobile device to check ink levels.

Step 3: Run a Printhead Cleaning Cycle

  1. Printer Control Panel: Navigate to the settings or maintenance menu.
  2. Select 'Clean Printhead': Follow the on-screen instructions to initiate a printhead cleaning cycle. You may need to run this cycle more than once.

Step 4: Align the Printhead

  1. Printer Control Panel: Find the option to align the printhead in the settings or maintenance menu.
  2. Follow Instructions: Complete the alignment process as instructed by the printer.

Step 5: Perform a Manual Cleaning

  1. Turn Off the Printer: Unplug the power cord.
  2. Remove the Ink Cartridges: Take out both the black and color ink cartridges.
  3. Clean the Printhead: Use a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water to gently wipe the printhead nozzles.
  4. Reinstall the Cartridges: After cleaning, let the printhead dry for a few minutes, then reinstall the cartridges and close the access door.
  5. Plug In and Turn On the Printer: Power up the printer and try printing again.

Step 6: Use a Printhead Cleaning Kit

If manual cleaning doesn't resolve the issue, consider using a printhead cleaning kit. These kits often include a cleaning solution and tools to help clear any blockages.

Step 7: Update Printer Firmware  Update the firmware on an HP printer

  1. HP Support: Visit the HP support website and check for any available firmware updates for your printer model.
  2. Download and Install: Follow the instructions to download and install any updates.

Step 8: Reset the Printer

  1. Turn Off the Printer: Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer and the wall outlet.
  2. Wait 60 Seconds: Leave the printer unplugged for at least one minute.
  3. Plug In and Turn On: Reconnect the power cord and turn the printer back on.

Tips to Prevent Future Issues

  • Regular Use: Print a page or two every few weeks to keep the ink flowing and prevent the printhead from drying out.
  • Proper Storage: Store ink cartridges in a cool, dry place if you won't be using the printer for an extended period.
