I think I have Windows 10. I just now installed new ink cartridges and when I closed up the printer it printed an alignment page. Now when I try to print the printer screen says, "Remove and reinstall the indicatred ink cartridge, making sure it is correctly instaled, and then touch ok." It appears to me that it's referring to the black cartridge so I removed and reinstalled it first but that didn't work. I them removed and installed both cartridges several time but it still doesn't work. Any suggestions?

Hi @Johnny1960,

The "Remove and reinstall the indicated ink cartridge" error on your HP Envy 5640 usually means the printer is having trouble recognizing the cartridge. Try these troubleshooting steps:

1. Restart the Printer

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  • Wait 2-3 minutes, then plug it back in and turn it on.
  • Try printing again.

2. Check for Protective Tape

  • Remove the black ink cartridge and inspect the copper-colored contacts.
  • Make sure the protective plastic tape is completely removed.
  • Do NOT touch the contacts or nozzles.

3. Clean the Ink Cartridge Contacts

  • Turn off the printer and remove the cartridges.
  • Use a lint-free cloth or a cotton swab slightly dampened with distilled water or isopropyl alcohol.
  • Gently wipe the copper-colored contacts on the cartridge and the corresponding contacts inside the printer.
  • Let them dry completely, then reinstall the cartridges.

4. Reset the Printer

  • Remove the ink cartridges.
  • Unplug the printer from power and wait 10 minutes.
  • Plug it back in and turn it on without the cartridges.
  • Wait until the printer prompts you to insert them, then reinstall the cartridges.

5. Try a Different Ink Cartridge

  • If possible, try using a different black ink cartridge (new or an old working one).
  • If the error disappears, the issue is with the current cartridge.

6. Update or Reinstall Printer Drivers

  • Open Device Manager (Press Win + X, then select Device Manager).
  • Expand Printers, right-click HP Envy 5640, and select Uninstall device.
  • Restart your computer, and Windows should reinstall the printer automatically.
  • Alternatively, download the latest drivers from HP's support website and install them manually.

7. Perform a Factory Reset on the Printer

  • On the printer touchscreen, go to:
    • Setup → Printer Maintenance → Restore Defaults
    • Select Restore Factory Defaults
  • Reconnect the printer to Wi-Fi and try printing again.

Let me know if any of these steps help! 😊
