HP ENVY 6455e All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

I installed HP67XL inkjet cartridges. Never had a problem. Now the yellow light comes on the printer, printer won't work, and message says I have to buy the subscription cartridges. Can't I just use the HP cartridges from the store?

Hi @WendyLA,

I understand your HP Envy 6455e shows a yellow light and will not print after installing HP 67XL cartridges, and the printer is asking for subscription cartridges. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Check if the printer is an “e” (HP+) model
The HP Envy 6455e is designed to work with HP+ / Instant Ink if it was activated during initial setup.
When HP+ is enabled, the printer is locked to Instant Ink subscription cartridges only.

Understand why store-bought cartridges are being rejected
HP 67XL cartridges purchased from a store are standard retail cartridges.
If HP+ is active, the printer will block printing and show a yellow/amber light when non-subscription cartridges are installed.

Confirm the Instant Ink subscription status
If the Instant Ink plan is paused, canceled, or payment failed, the printer will stop printing.
This happens even if the cartridges still have ink.

Try reinstalling Instant Ink cartridges (if available)
If you still have the original Instant Ink cartridges, reinstall them and restart the printer.
Printing should resume if the subscription is active.

Power reset the printer
With the printer turned on, unplug the power cord from the back.
Wait 60 seconds, reconnect the cord, and turn the printer back on.

Verify the meaning of the yellow light
A steady or blinking yellow light indicates a supplies or subscription issue, not a printer hardware fault.
This confirms the printer is blocking printing due to cartridge type or subscription status.

If you want to use store-bought HP cartridges
Store-bought HP cartridges can only be used if the printer was never activated with HP+.
Once HP+ is enabled on an “e” model, it cannot be removed, and Instant Ink cartridges are required.

Important clarification
Yes, HP cartridges from the store do work, but not on an HP Envy 6455e that has HP+ enabled. In that case, the printer will only accept Instant Ink subscription cartridges.

This explains why the printer worked before and why it is now blocking printing after the cartridge change.

I hope this helps.
