Out of the blue my HP Envy Inspire 7900e suddenly reported that my black ink cartridge was altered or cloned. It had been printing fine before with the same cartridge. I have replaced it with another genuine HP cartridge and the same message is appearing. I have tried unplugging for 60 second to reset the printer, but that hasn't helped. I don't know what else I can do. I don't want to spend another $56 on a third ink cartridge when I suspect its a printer error.

Hi @KateMcIntyre,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you are facing a printer that suddenly starts rejecting genuine HP cartridges, it could be due to several issues. Here are a few things you can try:
- Check for Firmware Updates: Sometimes, firmware updates can resolve compatibility issues. Check if there's a firmware update available for your HP Envy Inspire 7900e and install it. Update the firmware on an HP printer
- Clean the Contacts: Turn off the printer and unplug it. Open the cartridge access door and gently clean the metal contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer using a soft, lint-free cloth. Be careful not to touch the contacts with your fingers.
- Reset the Printer: Perform a more thorough reset. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer and the wall. Wait for at least 60 seconds, then reconnect the power cord and turn the printer back on.
- Check Cartridge Compatibility: Make sure you're using the correct cartridge model for your printer. Even though they're genuine HP cartridges, it's worth verifying that they're compatible with the Envy Inspire 7900e.
- Printer Diagnostics: Run any built-in diagnostic tools from the printer's control panel or HP Smart app. Sometimes these tools can help identify and resolve issues.
