HP Envy 4500 printer says "Ink Cartridge Problem": The following ink cartridge(s) must be replaced. I replaced the cartridges and still receive the error message. I always use HP cartridges according to the specifications for this model.
I have tried resetting the printer by unplugging the power cord for 10 minutes and then powering it on again. This did not fix the problem. I have also tried shutting it down and restarting it, as well as removing and then replacing the ink cartridges.

Hi @AKG08,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
Thank you for reaching out—I know how frustrating it is when your printer won’t recognize new cartridges, especially when you’re using genuine HP ink. You've already taken the right steps by resetting the printer and reinstalling the cartridges.
Let’s try a few more quick actions to get you printing again:
1. Double-Check Cartridge Compatibility
- The HP Envy 4500 uses HP 61 or HP 61XL cartridges.
- Make sure you didn’t accidentally install setup cartridges or cartridges from another printer model.
2. Clean the Cartridge Contacts
- Turn off the printer and unplug it.
- Open the cartridge access door and remove the cartridges.
- Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water to gently clean the gold-colored contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer.
- Let everything dry for 10 minutes before reinserting.
3. Reset the Printer
You’ve tried unplugging, but try this full reset:
- Turn on the printer.
- With the printer on, unplug the power cord from the back.
- Unplug from the wall outlet.
- Wait 60 seconds.
- Plug it back into the wall first, then the printer.
4. Try One Cartridge at a Time
- Remove both cartridges.
- Insert only the black cartridge and check for errors.
- Then try only the color cartridge.
- This can help identify if one of them is faulty.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

I tried all of your suggestions, and I'm still getting an error message for the black ink cartridge, which is brand new and is the correct #61 black ink cartridge for my HP Envy 4500 printer. I don't know what else to do. Ink cartridges are not cheap.
