HP Recommended

Our HP Laser Jet Pro 400 M401dne  is producing very bad quality prints.  It is as if a roller needs cleaning.  the ink is smudged and it is as if it is imprinted on a roller as parts are reprinted on to the paper. is it possible to clean a roller?  since this has been happening we have put a new toner cartridge in but the bad quality print is still happening.  it is a black ink printer any suggestions please?
