HP LaserJet MFP M236dw Printer

I am using original HP cartridge for my printer from last few months. Recently printer was updated automatically and now it is showing an error Indicated cartridges blocked for containing a non-HP chip.

Is their any way to downgrade firmware?

@Anawaz.

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I'm sorry to hear about the issue you're experiencing with your HP LaserJet MFP M236dw printer. This problem appears to be related to a recent firmware update (version 20250209) released on March 4, 2025, which has been reported to cause cartridge recognition errors, even with genuine HP cartridges.

Firmware Downgrade:

  • Downgrading the printer's firmware to a previous version might resolve the issue. However, HP typically does not support firmware downgrades, and attempting this without proper guidance can risk further issues.

Disable Automatic Firmware Updates:

  • To prevent future occurrences, consider disabling automatic firmware updates:
    • Access the printer's Embedded Web Server (EWS) by entering the printer's IP address into a web browser.
    • Navigate to the "Settings" or "Printer Maintenance" section.
    • Locate the firmware update settings and select the option to disable automatic updates.

Note:

Third-Party Cartridge Compatibility:

  • HP's dynamic security feature may prevent the use of cartridges with non-HP chips. Ensure you're using genuine HP cartridges to avoid compatibility issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi @Kuroi

thanks for reply however it didn't solved my issue. You didn't mentioned how to downgrade firmware. I already disabled updates however firmware is still latest and printer is not working.

Hi @Anawaz,

I understand how frustrating this must be. Unfortunately, HP does not support firmware downgrades, so we won’t be able to assist with that process.

However, here are a few steps you can try to resolve the issue:

Reset the printer:

Turn off the printer, unplug it for about 10 minutes, then plug it back in and restart.

Reinstall the Cartridge:

Remove the cartridge, clean the chip area with a dry cloth, and reinsert it.

Check Cartridge Authenticity:

Even if your cartridge is original, ensure it has an HP chip by verifying the packaging.

If the issue still persists, refer to the steps on this link to restore factory defaults.

I hope this helps.
