My HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 prints from my computer fine, but photocopies come out half black, with finely spaced black/color lines.
I have re-seated the cartridges to no avail.
Running Mac OS Sonoma 14.5.

HI @jancunningham,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 is experiencing a hardware issue with photocopying. Here are some steps you can try to troubleshoot the problem:
Troubleshooting Steps
Clean the Scanner Glass:
- Ensure the scanner glass is clean and free from any smudges or debris. Use a soft, lint-free cloth and glass cleaner (sprayed on the cloth, not directly on the glass).
Check for Obstructions:
- Open the scanner lid and check for any obstructions or foreign objects that might be affecting the scanning process.
Perform Printhead Cleaning:
- Even though printing from the computer works fine, perform a printhead cleaning via the printer’s control panel or HP Smart app. This can help resolve issues with print quality during copying.
Update Printer Firmware:
- Check for any available firmware updates on the HP support website. Updating the firmware can fix known issues.
Reset Printer Settings:
- Try resetting the printer to factory settings to resolve any configuration issues.
Use a Different Paper Type:
- Sometimes, using a different type of paper can affect the quality of copies. Ensure you’re using the recommended paper type.
Test Different Copy Settings:
- Experiment with different copy settings (e.g., quality settings) from the printer control panel to see if that affects the output.
If the Problem Persists
If these steps don’t resolve the issue, consider the following:
Perform a Printer Self-Test:
- Print a self-test page directly from the printer to check if the issue persists in the self-test output.
Check for Hardware Issues:
- If the problem continues, it may indicate a hardware malfunction. Contact HP support for further diagnosis and possible repairs.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
