I cleaned the print heads twice and pulled both ink cartridges. HP Smart indicates that I have sufficient ink in both cartridges. I shook both cartridges and reinstalled them and again cleaned the print heads. I printed a test sheet and no ink appeared on the paper even though I could hear the print heads moving while attempting to print the test sheet. I earlier attempted to copy a document using the copy feature, but it also would not print in the same fashion.

Hi @TLR6,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Here are several troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue with your HP OfficeJet 3840 printer.
Verify Ink Cartridge Compatibility
- Ensure the cartridges are the correct model for your printer.
- Check if the cartridges are genuine HP products, as non-HP or remanufactured cartridges can sometimes cause issues.
Inspect Ink Cartridges
- Remove the cartridges and inspect them for any clogs, leaks, or damage.
- Clean the electrical contacts on the cartridges and inside the printer using a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water.
- Reinsert the cartridges and ensure they are seated correctly.
Run the Printhead Cleaning Process Again
- Use the printer's software or the control panel to run the printhead cleaning utility multiple times (up to 3 cycles).
- Allow the printer to rest between cycles to avoid overheating the printhead.
Check Printer Settings
- Ensure the correct paper size, type, and print quality settings are selected.
- Perform a printer alignment through the HP Smart app or the printer control panel.
Print a Test Page
- Try printing a diagnostic page or print quality report from the printer menu or HP Smart app. Check if there are any faint lines or patterns indicating partial ink flow.
Perform a Manual Reset
- Turn the printer off and unplug it from the power source.
- Wait 5 minutes, then reconnect and turn it on. This can clear potential temporary glitches.

Inspect the Paper Path
- Confirm there are no obstructions or dirt in the paper path that could interfere with ink transfer.
- Ensure the paper used is compatible with your printer.
Update Printer Firmware
- Ensure the printer firmware is up to date. Use the HP Smart app or the HP website to check for updates.
Test with New Cartridges
- If possible, try replacing the cartridges with new ones. Sometimes, even if the ink level shows sufficient, cartridges can fail internally and stop dispensing ink.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
