My HP OfficeJet Pro 6975 won’t print using black ink. It prints in color without any issue. This started after replacing the ink cartridge. Tried to clean the printheads multiple times without success. Bought new ink for both the black and 3 colors with the same results. I tried to clean the printheads by putting wet paper towel underneath and moving the print cartridge holder back and forth. I did notice that there was ink that was cleaned off after this procedure. I do not believe that I am able to remove the printhead from this model. This seems to be a common problem with this model of printer based on the HP forum and various internet results. Looking for what options the HP experts may have in how to resolve this issue.

Hi @funjem ,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The quality of a printed document or photo is not as expected. The procedures in this document should help with streaked or faded printouts, color or black ink not printing, documents with blurred or fuzzy text, ink streaks or smears, and other print quality problems. May I know if it happens while copying too?
Solution one: Use genuine HP cartridges
HP recommends that you use genuine HP ink or toner supplies. HP cannot guarantee the quality or reliability of non-HP or refilled cartridges. If you do not use genuine HP cartridges, the steps in this document might not resolve the issue.
Solution two: Allow automatic servicing to complete:
- If waiting for automatic servicing to complete resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
- If waiting for automatic servicing to complete did not resolve the issue, continue to the next solution.
Solution three: Check the paper
Solution four: Check the print settings
Solution five: Check the estimated ink levels, and then replace any depleted cartridges
Solution six: Print and evaluate a diagnostic page, and then troubleshoot defects
I request you to click here to check all the steps in detail. Each step is mentioned in the link.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hi Rachel571,
Thanks for taking the time to reply to my inquiry. I have tried the troubleshooting steps that you posted and my replies are below. Please let me know what to try next. Question.. is the printhead on this printer replaceable and if so does it have to be done by an authorized HP service agent?

I am using genuine HP ink. I had new ink for all the cartridges when the issue first appeared. I replaced them all with new ink cartridges to rule that out. Ran the Printhead Cleaner multiple times. Had the same result where the Black Ink is the only ink not printing. The print quality report is successful for the color ink but completely blank for the black. The copying and scan features are working properly for those items that are in black.
Solution two: Allow automatic servicing to complete:
- If waiting for automatic servicing to complete resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.

Reply to Solution two
Ran the clean printhead multiple times with no positive results for the black ink.
Solution three: Check the paper
Reply to Solution three
Replaced the paper in the printer with new paper with no positive results. Only printing the colors.
Solution four: Check the print settings
Reply to Solution four
The OS that I am using is Windows 11. In the advanced setting grayscale selected print in black & white only. Printed blank page.
Solution five: Check the estimated ink levels, and then replace any depleted cartridges
Reply to Solution five
Estimated ink levels are all high.
Solution six: Print and evaluate a diagnostic page, and then troubleshoot
Reply to Solution six
Print quality report does not have any sections that would come out in black. It does contain areas that print in color.
