OfficeJet Pro 8035e
macOS 11.0 Big Sur

Hi. My sister just bought a OfficeJet Pro 8035e. HP offered 12 months of free Instant Ink. Before opening the box, I looked for the small print pertaining to the ink offer. I knew there were stipulations. I read them carefully. Yet, I am still baffled by what HP is saying. There are statements such as: "Choose HP+ at product setup to activate benefits. HP+ requires an HP account, connection to the internet, and exclusive use of Original HP Ink cartridges for the life of the printer." And, "The printer is intended to be used solely with cartridges using an original HP chip. Cartridges using a non‐HP chip may not function or may cease to function." And, "Unless service is cancelled within the promotional period online…” So, she can take up the offer and can cancel her instant Ink account before the promotional period ends. But, if she does that, the printer is useless because she can only operate it with HP Instant Ink cartridges. So, in effect, once she subscribes to the program even if she cancels it, she is locked into their Instant Ink program unless she wants to use the printer as a big paper weight. Is this all correct? Can she even use the printer without HP Instant ink because of the chip? Can anyone help me to understand any of this? Thanks. -Gregg

Welcome to the HP Community.

Not sure I can explain this - the documents generally do a better job than can I.

Here goes...

There are indeed requirements with an Instant Ink subscription .

What is Instant Ink?

Instant Ink is a Print-by-Page subscription model that provides as much ink as needed for the selected "page" plan.

The information you need is included at the Instant Ink Website for your region.

HP+ is related to Instant Ink in the sense that signing up for HP+ provides for an Extended Trial period of the Instant Ink subscriptionThe subscription (or Trial) to Instant Ink is NOT mandatory to sign up for HP+.

Instant Ink - Cartridges

Yes, if the user subscribes and then (at any time / for any reason cancels) an Instant Ink subscription (plan or trial), all Instant Ink cartridges - those "activated" as part of the subscription setup and any subsequent Instant Ink deliveries - will lock and cannot be used in any printer.

At the close of the subscription (or trial), all Instant Ink cartridges must be removed from the printer and replaced with a purchased set of HP ink cartridges.

For those reading

HP+ - What is it?

Look on the box - See the notice "6 months with HP+"

For the extended trial, opt (choose / sign up) for HP+ service to be eligible for the extended 6 month Instant Ink offer.

What?

HP+ is NOT Instant Ink - the two are related in the sense that the Instant Ink Trial period is extended when you opt (choose) HP+ service.

There are other limitations, benefits, responsibilities when you choose HP+ service.

For example, at this writing, HP+:

  • HP+ includes an extended (longer) Warranty on your printer
  • Requires that you always use HP genuine ink cartridges in the printer - Again, this is not "Instant Ink" - the requirement is that you use HP branded ink
  • The printer must be connected to the Internet to allow monitoring by the HP+ Service
  • HP+ service includes Concierge Service - with extra setup help and assistance

Hi. I apologize for not replying sooner. My wife and I contracted Covid...we're ok, only because we were vaccinated beforehand. Otherwise, it would have been bad.

Thank you for your advice. It was helpful.
