I'm having the same issue as many others have had with HP cartridges on the Officejet 250. I have a brand new HP 62XL cartridge (NOT OEM) and keep receiving "Please remove and reinstall the indicated cartridge, making sure it is correctly installed." I have done all the steps recommended including hard reset and even went into the service menu and did resets there to no avail. I have spent so much time on this with no success. Appreciate a quick response.

Hi @SherKing,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printer!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
Try these steps:
Verify Cartridge Compatibility: Make sure that the cartridge you are using is compatible with the HP Officejet 250. It's suggested to use genuine HP cartridges to ensure compatibility and quality.
Check Cartridge Installation:
- Open the printer's ink cartridge access door.
- Remove the problematic cartridge.
- Reinsert the cartridge firmly into the correct slot. Ensure that it snaps into place.
Examine Cartridge Contacts:
- Turn off the printer and unplug the power cord.
- Remove the cartridge and inspect the copper-colored contacts.
- Use a lint-free cloth or coffee filter dampened with distilled water to gently clean the contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer.
Perform a Hard Reset:
- Unplug the power cord while the printer is on.
- Wait for about 60 seconds, then reconnect the power cord.
- Turn the printer on and check if the error persists.
Verify Firmware Update:
- Check if there is any firmware update available for the HP Officejet 250 that might resolve cartridge recognition issues.
- Visit the HP Support website for the latest software and firmware updates.
Consider Using Genuine Cartridges: Non-OEM cartridges might not work properly due to compatibility issues. Switching to genuine HP cartridges can sometimes resolve this problem.
I hope this helps.

As mentioned in the post I had already done all the things you listed in your "solution" and yes, using the correct HP cartridge and again as mentioned in the post NOT AN OEM cartridge. This is some sort of a software/firmware issue that needs a fix.

Hi @SherKing,
Thanks for your reply, and I completely understand your frustration, especially after putting in so much effort already.
To clarify, HP printers like the OfficeJet 250 are designed to work best with genuine HP cartridges. While some non-OEM cartridges may physically fit and even initially work, HP cannot guarantee their compatibility, particularly if the printer has received recent firmware updates. These updates help maintain print quality, security, and performance, and they may restrict the use of non-genuine cartridges.
Since you’re using a non-OEM cartridge, the issue is likely related to cartridge recognition or authentication, which may not be resolved through standard resets or cleaning steps.
Verify with the supplier if the cartridge is HP-authorized or compatible with the latest HP firmware.
If possible, try installing a genuine HP 62XL cartridge to confirm whether the issue lies with the cartridge or the printer.
Keep your printer’s firmware up to date to ensure the best performance and ongoing compatibility with genuine HP supplies.
I know it’s not the resolution you were hoping for, but I do recommend trying a genuine HP cartridge just once, even a standard 62 black, to isolate the issue fully.
Take care and have an amazing day ahead! 🚀
