Hi @Jane7751

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If the printer cartridge in your HP OfficeJet 6862 is not moving, it can be frustrating. Since you’ve already checked for paper jams, here are some additional troubleshooting steps you can follow to resolve this issue:

Step 1: Power Cycle the Printer

Sometimes a simple restart can resolve temporary issues with the printer’s internal mechanisms.

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.Wait for about 60 seconds.
  2. Plug the printer back in and turn it on.See if the cartridges move or if any error message appears on the display.

Step 2: Check for Obstructions

Even though you’ve checked for paper jams, sometimes small debris can cause the cartridge to get stuck.

  1. Open the printer’s ink cartridge access door.
  2. Manually gently move the ink cartridge (if possible) to see if it’s stuck due to something inside.
  3. Check for any paper bits, dust, or other debris that may be obstructing the cartridge carriage’s path. Clean the area carefully with a soft, lint-free cloth or a can of compressed air.

Step 3: Check the Cartridges

Make sure the cartridges are properly installed and seated in their slots.

  1. Remove the cartridges from the printer.
  2. Check the cartridge contacts for any dirt or ink buildup. Clean them gently using a soft, lint-free cloth.
  3. Reinstall the cartridges and ensure they are seated correctly in their respective slots.

Step 4: Reset the Printer

If the printer is still unresponsive, try a factory reset.

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Hold down the “#” and “9” buttons simultaneously on the printer's control panel.
  3. While holding the buttons, turn the printer back on. Continue holding the buttons until the printer resets.

Note: This may reset some of the printer’s settings, so you might need to reconfigure it afterward.

Step 5: Check for Firmware or Software Issues

Outdated firmware or software could cause the printer to behave incorrectly.

  1. Update the printer firmware via HP’s website or the HP Smart app if you have it installed.
  2. If you're using the printer on your PC, make sure the printer driver is up to date.

Step 6: Try Moving the Cartridges Manually

In rare cases, the mechanism might have a problem that prevents the cartridges from moving.

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Manually move the carriage to the left or right. It should move smoothly when the printer is powered off.

I hope this helps.
