Using original inkjet cartridges.  Printer popped up randonmly after using the printer for over a year saying that setup needed to be completed.  Completed setup on desktop HP Smart software.  After that the black XL cartridge claimed it was counterfeit. What the F**&!

How do i block this silly counterfeit function and turn it off???  Not the first time i have seen this during my loyal life of owning HP printers - 15 years+

Advice to HP Engineering - get rid of this counterfeit functionality - annoying and unreliable! If this cannot be fixed - taking printer to the curb and buying a different brand!  Final e-mail......

Advice? steps?

thanks,

Chris.

Hello Hawks-eye

followed your steps exactly. Black cartridge still claims it is counterfeit. I am done with HP. This is ridiculous. Holding consumers hostage to buy only hp cartridges and then when you do it does not even work! Too bad, the printer is decent but the software sucks!

Monday I will buy another brand that does not impose such restrictive regulations on its ink

best of luck with this product. One more consumer gone

Hi @Chrisdlove

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I hear your frustration—HP’s counterfeit detection can be unreliable, especially when using genuine cartridges

Perform a Hard Reset

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from power.
  • Wait 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.

Reinstall the Ink Cartridge

  • Remove the black XL cartridge and inspect the chip/contact points for dust or damage.
  • Reinsert it firmly and restart the printer.

Update the firmware on an HP printer:

  • HP regularly releases new firmware versions for printer enhancements, app updates, or issue fixes. Update the firmware regularly to get the most out of your printer.
  • Click on the link below for instructions on how to update the firmware of your printer:

Disable HP Cartridge Protection (If Available)

  • Open HP Smart or HP Printer Assistant on your computer.
  • Navigate to Settings > Printer Preferences and look for Cartridge Protection.
  • If the option exists, disable it.

Try a Different Cartridge

  • If possible, test with another genuine HP cartridge to see if the issue persists.
  • Some users have reported success after replacing the affected cartridge.

I hear your frustration, and I truly understand how disappointing this experience has been for you.

You’ve put in a lot of effort to troubleshoot, and it’s unfortunate that it continues to flag your ink as counterfeit despite it being a legitimate purchase.

I'm sending you a private message to guide you on the next steps.

Hello Hawks_Eye,

In the top right corner there are two rows, each with my name.

The very top has a shopping cart icon, a person icon, and then my name

The next row has  bell, a person icon, and then my name.

The next row has an bullhorn icon off to the right column with a red circle with a red "1) inside.  this alert ion is related to Windows 11 optimization.

I do not see any icon that is related to a private message.

Thx,

Chris.

PS. Noah from HP called today and has said that they will call me back to assist in resolving this issue.  Honestly, for all the headaches that HP is causing their consumers over this counterfeit ink technology, they should simply open the standard and allow OEM cartridges.  If the printer breaks or fails to work as a result of the "bad" ink, well, that is on the consumer.

The fact that the technology is giving false positives...which as an Electrical and Computer Engineer - which is what I am, is worse.  Bad software, bad design, and bad corporate decision to go down this path (my opinion).
