My printer refuses to work with non-HP print cartridges, claiming something about an "HP chip". This printer did not have this problem when I initially bought and installed it, so this limitation was something HP added that I did not authorize.

The problem appears to be HP Dynamic Security. How do I disable this feature for this printer?

I do not see anything available to do this in "settings" and the printer firmware status is that everything is up-to-date.

Hi @CJamesCook,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The issue you're encountering with your HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 is likely due to HP's Dynamic Security feature, which was introduced via firmware updates to restrict the use of third-party ink cartridges. However, you can resolve this by performing the following steps.

Check for Available Firmware:

HP occasionally releases firmware updates that allow for third-party cartridges after user backlash. You can check for firmware that removes Dynamic Security.

  • Visit HP's support page and look for firmware updates for the OfficeJet Pro 8710.
  • If available, download and install a version that removes Dynamic Security.

Revert to an Older Firmware:

You may need to roll back to a previous firmware version that predates the introduction of Dynamic Security. Here's how:

  • Step 1: Download an older firmware version from a trusted source (HP may not provide old versions officially).
  • Step 2: Access the printer’s control panel or use the HP Printer Assistant on your computer to perform a manual firmware update (rolling back the firmware).
  • Step 3: Disable automatic firmware updates after rolling back. This can usually be done in the printer’s settings.

Disable Automatic Firmware Updates:

To prevent future firmware updates that could reintroduce Dynamic Security:

  • From your printer's control panel or via the HP Smart app, go to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Update the Printer.
  • Disable automatic updates.

This solution should help in getting your third-party cartridges working again.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
